Reality Check for Speaker Ryan: Here's What Your Tax Plan Actually Does

Upon unveiling the Ryan-McConnell tax framework, Republicans would have you believe that their plan exclusively benefits the middle class.  However, on this morning's Sunday Shows both Speaker Paul Ryan and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin could not promise that their plan gives tax relief for working Americans – because it won't.

SPEAKER RYAN ON CBS' FACE THE NATION:

"Well first of all, the whole purpose of this is to get a middle class tax cut, to help the people who are working paycheck to paycheck and keep more of their own hard-earned dollars."

SECRETARY MNUCHIN ON ABC's THIS WEEK:

"We can't make that guarantee, but we can say that's our objective."

FROM THE NONPARTISAN TAX POLICY CENTER:

  • 80: Percent of the individual tax benefits in the Ryan-McConnell framework that benefit the wealthiest one percent of Americans
  • $2.4 trillion: Added to the federal deficit as a result of lost tax revenue
  • Hard-working middle class families would pay more in taxes as a result of this plan

No wonder Republicans can't guarantee their tax agenda will help the middle class.  The fact is, the Ryan-McConnell tax framework is a shameful assault on the middle class that will add trillions of dollars to the deficit in tax giveaways for the rich.

Democrats stand with the American people in demanding real job-creating, wage-raising tax reform with not one penny in tax breaks for the wealthiest one percent.
