On ABC's The View, Leader Pelosi Pushes Passing the DREAM Act Now
Leader Pelosi also discussed the pressing need for response efforts in rebuilding Puerto Rico, and the opportunity it presents to modernize infrastructure following Hurricane Maria.
Below are the highlights.
On the Lack of Response Following Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico:
"What is challenging is that the President keeps giving himself a ten. When people are suffering – even if you think you've done a good job – there's so much more to be done."
"Let's just talk about doing better and getting water to everyone, getting power to everyone and making this a real opportunity for Puerto Rico to leap frog over the power grid to something that is a model to the world."
On President Trump's Divisive Rhetoric:
"I don't subscribe to the fact that there's a cultural war in our country. There are divisions. There are disagreements and the rest. I think there's plenty of opportunity to bring people together."
On President Trump and Passing the DREAM Act:
"Part of what we wanted to say to him is we have some challenges with some of the things you've done in terms of the Affordable Care Act, walking away from the Paris Agreement. … We had a list of concerns that we were disappointed in the President's actions on them and said we said, ‘we need a confidence builder, a threshold we have to cross together where we have our shared values.' And for us that is DACA because it's on a very short fuse."
"It's on a very short fuse from what he had done [on DACA]. He didn't have to do that. That was really heart breaking that he did what he did."
…
"Nevertheless he said he supports the DREAMers. I think he supports the DREAMers because the American people support them – not because of us, but because of who the DREAMers are."
On the Future of the Democratic Party
"It's always been a dynamic party. That's the vitality of it."
"We are the ones communicating with the American people on this. We have A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future for the American people."
