Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi joinedHis Excellency Isaac Herzog, President of the State of Israel, for a photo opportunity ahead of a bilateral meeting. Below are the Speaker's remarks:
Speaker Pelosi. Good afternoon, everyone.
Thank you for being here to join me in welcoming the very distinguished President of Israel, President Herzog, to the Capitol once again. It's a personal, as well as official, honor for me to welcome the President. I had the privilege of being in Israel in February, when you welcomed our delegation to the presidency, to the president's home there, where we discussed many of the challenges that we have about stability in the region, global security, our shared values. And we even had some music and poetry. Again, and friendship.
Mr. President, your visit is coming at a very important time, as we observe the agreement that our President had a role in playing, in terms of Israel and Lebanon's breakthrough agreement on the maritime boundaries and the rest. So – look forward to that conversation.
As you know, the world is – I just got back from Croatia for a meeting with 50 countries – came together to talk about what's happening in Crimea and in the rest of Ukraine. Many challenges in the world – Israel's thinking is always important to us.
In the next few months, we will observe the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel – 75th anniversary, that will happen in the spring, but we're already getting ready for it. We take great pride that our President, President Truman, in a matter of minutes, recognized the State of Israel. And since that time, we've had a strong bond, based on shared values, common security interest, stability in the region and prosperity for both of our [countries]. These and other subjects will be – we'll discuss in a bipartisan way, as soon as we finish extending this greeting to Mr. President Herzog. Welcome, Mr. President.
