Pelosi Statement on Four Years Since the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting

October 27, 2022

San Francisco — Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement marking four years since the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh:

"As Americans mark four years since the horrendous attack on Pittsburgh's Tree of Life Synagogue, the deadliest antisemitic massacre in American history, my colleagues and I join our nation's Jewish community in mourning eleven peaceful worshippers stolen away by a monstrous act of hate. Our hearts weigh heavy as we comfort those forever scarred by unimaginable loss, and we solemnly recommit to honoring those killed by forging a brighter future. Our country has a moral responsibility to combat the scourge of antisemitism – to ensure every American can live free from bigoted speech and hate-fueled violence.

"Yet even as we mark this dark day, sickening words, symbols and acts of hate continue to torment Jews and other communities across the country. Today's anniversary highlights our collective obligation to condemn and reject antisemitism in all its forms – from the vile conspiracies amplified by a celebrity to the violent extremism inflamed by the far right. Fame is not a license to incite violence, and such despicable rhetoric undermines the basic tenets of American democracy. More than 230 years ago, President George Washington wrote to Newport, Rhode Island's Touro Synagogue that the United States ‘gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.' Disgusted by those who would seek to do otherwise, House Democrats will never relent in upholding our nation's most cherished values and standing against antisemitism wherever it appears.

"Today, and every day, let us renew our resolve to disarm the forces of hate, build safer communities for our children and finally toss antisemitism into the dustbin of history. Through that vital work, we strive to console devastated loved ones and pay tribute to the beautiful souls murdered four years ago. May their memories be a blessing."
