Pelosi Statement on Congresswoman Shea-Porter’s Decision Not to Seek Re-Election

October 6, 2017
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter of New Hampshire's decision not to seek re-election:

"Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter's trailblazing leadership has transformed the lives of millions of Americans across the country.  As the first woman elected to federal office from New Hampshire, she has inspired countless women to fight for a seat at the table.  Her inspiring story is an enduring testament to the power of our democracy: that engaged, informed citizens can earn a seat at the table, and change the course of history.

"A military spouse, Carol has been a fierce champion for our servicemembers, military families and veterans.  Her tireless leadership has helped ensure that our courageous men and women in uniform have access to quality health care, jobs and education upon their return.  As a Member of the Armed Service Committee, she has fought successfully to pass an expanded GI Bill of Rights and protect our troops from threats ranging from burn pit toxins to the devastation of PTSD.  Shea-Porter's leadership in advocating for students, seniors and working families has been invaluable, and will benefit the people of the Granite State for years to come.

"Hard-working families have found a champion in Carol Shea-Porter.  We will all miss her dedicated leadership and strong service.  My colleagues and I wish her the best as she begins the next chapter of her journey."
