Pelosi Names Appointees to the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission

November 16, 2017
Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi named Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Ken Morris Jr., President of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives, to the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission.

"It is my deep privilege to name two outstanding champions for justice and equality to the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission," said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.  "Each day, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Ken Morris Jr. honor the exceptional life and legacy of Frederick Douglass.  We are grateful for their dedication to Frederick Douglass' lifelong struggle for equality for all Americans, and for their tireless work to pass the bipartisan, bicameral bill establishing this commission."

The Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission is dedicated to planning, developing and executing initiatives commemorating the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of the father of the abolitionist movement, Frederick Douglass.  Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton sponsored H.R.2989, the legislation creating the commission.  Ken Morris Jr., the President of the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives and the great-great-great grandson of Frederick Douglass, was also integral to the legislation's passage.

"Frederick Douglass led the battle for abolition, civil rights and an America that lived up to its creed of equality," said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.  "Four years ago, it was my great honor to unveil the Frederick Douglass Statue in the U.S. Capitol.  The bicentennial commission will help further ensure Douglass' prominent place in the pantheon of history."
