Pelosi Statement on Trump Administration Decision to End Temporary Protected Status for Nicaraguans

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after the Trump Administration ended Temporary Protected Status for people from Nicaragua. TPS is a provision under the bipartisan Immigration Act of 1990 that grants temporary safe haven to men, women and children fleeing armed conflict, natural disasters, epidemics or other extraordinary conditions in their home countries:

"The Trump Administration's decision is a cowardly assault on thousands of families in communities across the nation. Mothers and fathers who have lived in America for two decades will be ripped from their children, and communities will be torn apart.

"With this act of senseless prejudice, the Administration is once again putting bigotry over our nation's values and security. This is a dark night of heartbreak and tears for thousands of families targeted by this decision and all the others fearful of losing their Temporary Protected Status because of President Trump.

"Coming after the President's decision to end DACA, the lives of thousands of law-abiding, hard-working people who contribute to America in every way will be thrown into danger and legal jeopardy. House Democrats call on the Administration to immediately rescind this decision. If the White House refuses to protect vulnerable people and keep families intact, Congress must pass a permanent, bipartisan fix."
