January 16, 2018
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of Dr. Mathilde Krim at the age of 91:

"Today, we mourn the loss of Dr. Mathilde Krim and celebrate her extraordinary legacy as a trailblazing champion in the fight against HIV/AIDS.  As an early researcher studying the epidemic and as a founding chairman of amfAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, Dr. Krim offered an unyielding voice for the vulnerable, guided by her unshakable belief that ‘each human life has the same value as any other.'  Her research and advocacy gave hope and strength to millions, and her determination to educate and engage fundamentally changed the public conversation about HIV/AIDS.

"Dr. Krim's groundbreaking research helped overcome the prejudice-fueled fears and misconceptions rife in the early years in the fight against HIV/AIDS.   Inspired by the incredible strength of men and women fighting HIV/AIDS, she moved beyond the lab to become an outspoken, fearless champion against homophobia and AIDS-related stigma.  Her advocacy was critical in raising awareness and funding for expanded research, education programs and community health initiatives.  In the process, Dr. Krim and the legions of brave men and women who fought alongside her extended lives and saved millions from the devastation of HIV/AIDS.

"For more than three decades, Dr. Krim dedicated her life and inspired countless others to dedicate their lives to making AIDS history.  Dr. Krim also leaves a beautiful legacy of progress on behalf of communities of color, the LGBT community and people struggling for equal justice under the law worldwide.  Let us honor her legacy by continuing her vital, life-saving work and ensure that this scourge is finally resigned to the history books.  May it be a comfort to all those who knew and loved Mathilde, that so many join in their sorrow at the passing of this true hero."
