Pelosi Statement After GOP Tax Committee Blocks ‘No Wage Increase, No Corporate Tax Breaks’ Amendment

Washington, D.C – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee moved to prevent consideration of Democrats' amendment, offered by Congressman Brian Higgins, to cut off the corporate rate reduction if workers do not see an increase in their wages:
"Today, House Democrats called Republicans on their bluff, and Republicans revealed their empty hand. Republicans are insisting that giving trillions to big corporations that ship jobs overseas will benefit hard-working families, yet absolutely refuse to take the blame if tax giveaways fail to grow Americans' wages. In voting down Democrats' accountability amendment, the GOP made clear that this tax plan is fundamentally a corporate giveaway delivered on the backs of the middle class.
"The American people deserve real, bipartisan tax reform that puts the middle class first, not a middle class nightmare that raises taxes on 38 million households. Sadly, this Republican tax bill is not tax reform or even tax cuts – it is a tax scam."
