Pelosi Statement on the Fourth Anniversary of the Shooting in Newtown

December 14, 2016
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the anniversary of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, which happened on December 14, 2012:

"Four years ago, a gunman took the lives of 20 small children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary.  In the words of the Sandy Hook Promise, ‘our hearts are broken, our spirits are not', and, today, we renew our vow to transform grief into action.

"Across America, we must continue to confront the inaction of Republicans in Congress by demanding a vote on commonsense gun violence legislation.  By passing the bipartisan King-Thompson legislation to expand background checks, and the ‘No Fly, No Buy' bill to keep guns out of the hands of suspected criminals and terrorists, we can take action to prevent another American from losing a loved one to gun violence.

"The families of Newtown – and the survivors of gun violence in communities throughout our nation – are demanding that this Congress take action to disarm hate.  Together, let us strive to transform despair into action.  Together, let us transform heartache into hope.  Let us keep working to end gun violence for all our families and for our shared future."
