Pelosi Statement on Bilateral Meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Munich – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after the Congressional delegation held a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz:

"Today, our Congressional delegation met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, a nation that has served as a steadfast partner of the United States and the transatlantic alliance in advancing security and stability.

"During our discussion, our delegation reaffirmed America's unwavering support for and commitment to diplomacy, and the NATO alliance. Chancellor Scholz reiterated what he told President Biden earlier this week: that our partners in the West stand united in the face of Russian hostilities against Ukraine. We agreed that Putin will face harsh and severe consequences if he chooses to invade Ukraine, including multilateral sanctions. We also discussed the urgent need for energy independence and diversification with the transition to clean, green energy sources.

"Our meeting underscored that the United States and Germany stand together in support of the Ukrainian people. We are committed to their sovereignty, territorial integrity and democratic values in the face of Russian aggression now and for the future."
