Pelosi Remarks at Press Conference on Net Neutrality National Day of Action
Leader Pelosi. Thank you very much [Congressman] Mike Doyle for your extraordinary leadership for democracy. Because that is what net neutrality is all about. We are very proud of the work of Senator Markey, which began in the House of Representatives on this subject and the telecommunications bill. We are now joined by the Distinguished Leader [Chuck Schumer]. Mr. Leader, I have become known for my eight hour speeches, but we have such an array of talent here with House and Senate Members, I may be the shortest speaker here today.
I just want to say this. I was with my family, extended family recently, and we were talking about one thing and another that is going on in our country. And I turned to my grandnephew and I said, ‘What do you think of all of this?' who is like 23 years old. And he said ‘My friends and I are interested in one thing: net neutrality. We see that as our future.' We see that as our future, this is an issue that young people rally to, as the distinguished Mr. Doyle said in 2015.
[Congresswoman] Anna Eshoo was very much a part of that, our distinguished Ranking Member, Mr. Pallone as well, to save net neutrality when the decision was made at the FCC. And now we have to save it again. So, I say to people out there, know your power. It is in your hands to advance democracy, to advance innovation, to keep America number one, to keep costs lower for consumers. Mr. Markey and Mr. Doyle have said it all so well, I associate myself with their remarks. But it is again, very much at stake, our democracy. I am proud of the work that has been done in the House for 150 co-sponsors. We want more. And now it is my privilege to yield to the distinguished Leader in the United States Senate – was that not short? Let's hear it for short. I mean it could have been longer.
[Laughter]
He wants me to say good things about him. Oh you know how great he is and that he has identified himself with this importance of democracy. Let us hear it for the distinguished Leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer.
