Pelosi Statement on Senate Republicans Blocking Passage of Women’s Health Protection Act

February 28, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked passage of the House-passed Women's Health Protection Act:

"By passing the Women's Health Protection Act in September, the Democratic House took bold action to defend health freedom for every person and enshrine into law the essential protections of Roe v. Wade. Today, Senate Republicans shamefully voted to block this vital legislation, which is an urgent moral imperative to ensure that Constitutional rights are not limited by income, background or zip code.

"Across the country, the right to abortion access and reproductive care, which has been relied upon by Americans for nearly half a century, is under all-out attack by Republican state legislatures. In Texas, the radical and flagrantly illegal SB8 threatens to deliver catastrophe to women, especially on low-income women, members of the LGBTQ community and women of color. Meanwhile, Mississippi is seeking to strike a devastating blow to the right to choose at the Supreme Court in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case.

"Democrats know that every woman, everywhere, has the Constitutional right to basic reproductive health care. Under the continued leadership of Congresswoman Judy Chu, House Democrats will never relent in defending health freedoms across our nation – wherever and whenever they come under threat."
