March 16, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement after Speakers and Presidents of Parliament of the G7 and European Union issued a Declarationfollowing a virtual meeting on Russia's aggression against Ukraine:

"This morning, the Speakers and Presidents of Parliament of the G7 and the European Union had the privilege of meeting virtually with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The Speaker shared with us the courage and resolve of the Ukrainian people. Following our meeting, we issued a strong and unified Declaration that made crystal clear the G7 nations' unwavering commitment to standing with Ukraine and against the Russian government's cruel, unprovoked war.

"During our meeting, the Speakers unequivocally condemned the Russian Federation for its illegal attack on Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We expressed our intention to continue to contribute to Russia's international and economic isolation as well as combat its disinformation. We called on the Russian government to immediately end its brutal, violent invasion and reiterated our support for negotiations that can achieve a lasting diplomatic solution.

"In addition, we conveyed our heartbreak at the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Ukraine, with more than three million refugees forced to flee their homes and countless civilians facing Russia's indiscriminate shelling of their communities. We reaffirmed our commitment to providing humanitarian, security and economic assistance to the people of Ukraine, and we salute them as they courageously defend democracy.

"On behalf of the United States Congress, I salute our partners in the G7 and the EU for the unity, commitment and determination they bring to our shared effort to advance our shared values and promote peace."
