Leader Pelosi to Trump: Walk the Walk
Leader Pelosi called the President's address a "bait-and-switch speech" and demanded that the President get to work on policies for the well-being of the American people, including by fighting for comprehensive immigration reform. After the White House floated the possibility of a Trump mention in last night's speech of comprehensive immigration reform, Trump instead heralded the construction of a "great wall along the southern border" and mentioned his Muslim and refugee ban that makes our nation less safe.
Memorable moments from the interview are below.
On Whether Immigration Reform is Possible:
"I certainly hope [President Trump is open to Immigration reform]. If he were, it would be consistent with President Reagan, and President Herbert Walker Bush. And [President] W. Bush was a great President on immigration, and President W. Bush could not convince his party to go down that path."
On Partial Citizenship for Immigrants:
"It's more about what our country is about. We have criticized other countries that said, ‘we'll utilize you as a workforce, but you're not fully present in our country.' And in my view, it's very important for us to say the path to citizenship is the dignity that these people deserve."
On Bipartisan Reform:
"I think there are plenty of ways we can work in a bipartisan way on immigration, in fact we have to. This is the life blood of our country, and the constant reinvigoration of the country, which are meritorious – that is merit based."
