What's Paul Ryan's Excuse?
March 22, 2018
On the heels of Republicans' vote to shut down the House Intel Committee's investigation into the Trump-Russia scandal, Speaker Ryan said that Putin "does not respect democracy." We totally agree with that, but what's Speaker Ryan and House Republicans' excuse?
Under Ryan's leadership:
- House Homeland and Administration Committees – two committees of jurisdiction – have held no full committee hearings on protecting our nation's elections. And Republicans refuse to subpoena DHS to turn over documents on election interference
- The Energy & Commerce Committee has held no full committee hearings on the Russian disinformation campaigns across our social media platforms.
- House Republicans have waged an all-out assault on the Department of Justice and the FBI to undermine Mueller's investigation and the veracity of its findings.
- Republicans have capitulated to President Trump's will, proving their loyalty to him by calling for a new special counsel to investigate Trump's political enemies and Special Counsel Mueller.
The Speaker has to be held accountable for this Chamber's failure and sheer refusal to investigate or respond to the Russian threat to our democracy. House Republicans are abandoning their oath to support and defend the Constitution and threatening our national security, all to protect the political interest of President Trump.
Our nation deserves better. It's long past time for Speaker Ryan and House Republicans to make clear to the American people whose side they're on – Putin's or American democracy.
