Pelosi Statement on the Retirement Announcement of Congressman José E. Serrano

March 25, 2019
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement after Congressman José Serrano announced that he would retire at the end of his term:

"Congressman José Serrano has been a relentless champion for hard-working Americans in the South Bronx and throughout the United States.  Throughout his more than 50 years of service to our country, including 16 terms in Congress, he has been a progressive warrior, whose tireless leadership has helped lift up working families and ensure our nation always lives up to its most cherished values of freedom, justice and equality.

"Congressman Serrano's strong, determined leadership on the Appropriations Committee has been critical to promoting the economic and financial security of American families.  As the current Chairman of the Commerce, Justice, and Science subcommittee, he is taking critical, forward-looking action to address the climate crisis and build a healthy sustainable future for our children.  Chairman Serrano's commitment to securing legal aid funding, a fair and accurate Census count, life-saving resources in the aftermath of natural disasters, fair treatment for Puerto Rico and all U.S. territories in Congress' funding decisions, and many other priorities will leave a lasting legacy of progress for all, and will inspire countless other proud Americans to follow in his footsteps.

"When Congressman Serrano retires at the end of his term, Congress will lose a representative whose record of distinguished public service has been instrumental in promoting justice and expanding opportunity for all Americans.  Members of Congress will sorely miss Chairman Serrano's passion, leadership and insights, and we wish him and his family courage and strength."
