Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Civil Rights Legend Roger Wilkins

"Roger Wilkins loved American history.  As a professor, he inspired a generation of historians to explore the lessons and appreciate the beauty of our shared American story.  As a journalist, he revealed how the news of the day was informed by history's trajectory.  As a civil rights legend, he changed it.

"Wilkins' patriotism showed in his lasting devotion to strengthening our democracy.  With his Midwestern values and work ethic, Wilkins worked to dismantle the institutional racism and injustice that cut too many citizens off from the American Dream. Through public service, he helped foster progress during the Johnson Administration.  As a global citizen, and a child who attended racially segregated schools in the U.S., Wilkins contributed to the fight against apartheid in South Africa.

"The American story is richer because of Roger Wilkins' contributions to it.  May it be a source of comfort to the Wilkins family that so many mourn the passing of this great man during this difficult time."
