Pelosi Statement Following Meeting With National Council of La Raza (NCLR)

March 30, 2017
Washington, D.C. – Earlier today, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi met with the President of National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Janet Murguia, along with 22 representatives of NCLR-affiliate community groups from 16 states and Puerto Rico.  Members of NCLR thanked Leader Pelosi for her leadership in defeating TrumpCare, which would have had a devastating impact on the Latino community; underscored her leadership in securing House passage of the DREAM Act during her speakership; and discussed the Trump Administration's anti-immigrant executive orders that are separating children and mothers and instilling fear and chaos among immigrant communities.

"Immigration is the strength of America.  It is the constant reinvigoration of our country," said Leader Pelosi.  "When people come to our nation, they bring their optimism, hope and courage – values that make America more American.

Leader Pelosi also met with Fatima and Yuneli Avelica, whose father was recently detained by ICE shortly after dropping off one of his daughters at school, and assured them that House Democrats will continue to fight against the Trump-Republican anti-immigrant agenda, and for comprehensive immigration reform that will keep families together.

"I am proud of the work Janet and the National Council of La Raza have done in educating and empowering the Latino community, organizing to ensure more Americans register to vote and do not lose their access to affordable health care, and fighting for immigration reform our country so urgently needs," Leader Pelosi continued.
