Kinzinger to McCarthy: Stop Ignoring Officers Impacted by 1/6 and Whitewashing the Violence
In a deeply moving interview with CNN's Don Lemon, DC Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone – one of the many brave officers who defended the U.S. Capitol on January 6th and someone who was seriously injured by insurrectionists storming the building – discussed how difficult it is for him to see elected officials attempt to whitewash the events of January 6th:
"It's been very difficult seeing elected officials and other individuals kind of whitewash the events of that day or downplay what happened… You know, I experienced a group of individuals that were trying to kill me to accomplish, you know, their goal. And I think that – sorry, Don. Man, I didn't think I'd get this emotional. Yeah, I mean, I experienced the most brutal, savage hand-to-hand combat of my entire life."
Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has been at the forefront of this indefensible attempt to whitewash what happened on January 6th: repeatedlyattempting to excuse Trump's conduct and undermining a bipartisan commission focused on the violent insurrection at the Capitol.
After the interview, GOP Congressman Adam Kinzinger took to Twitter to call out McCarthy:
It's long past time for Leader McCarthy to answer the concerns raised by Rep. Kinzinger, Officer Fanone, and others: why is he trying to downplay the violence of January 6th and standing in the way of a bipartisan commission to study them?
