Washington D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for a photo opportunity at the top of their meeting in the Capitol. Below are the Speaker's remarks: | Speaker Pelosi. Good morning, everyone. It really is a jubilant occasion for many of us to welcome the Secretary General of NATO to the Capitol of the United States. At this time of the 70th anniversary of NATO, we want to say thank you to NATO and to the Secretary General for NATO's friendship, partnership and leadership in making the world a more peaceful place.
We thank him for his personal leadership and congratulate him on his – the extension of his – I don't know if it's an extension, but that we know he will be there a while longer.
When President Truman signed the NATO Treaty, he spoke about a ‘long step forward towards permanent peace in the whole world.'
Today, we affirm our commitment to the permanent peace and reaffirm America's commitment to NATO. So, a bipartisan, bicameral invitation to the Secretary General. We look forward to his remarks and, again, thank him for his leadership and NATO's leadership for a more peaceful world. Welcome, Mr. Secretary.
