After President Trump's Latest Comments, It's Time for an Intervention
May 2, 2017
Can someone please tell us what's going on in the White House and in President Trump's head? It's only Tuesday and Trump's nonsensical rants, inconsistency, and erratic behavior have once again sent shockwaves here at home and abroad with unforeseen consequences for our national security, standing in the world, and even the stature of the presidency.
- Last night Trump took one giant leap into bizarro land by doubling down on a puzzling claim that President Andrew Jackson, a slave owner who died in 1845, "was really angry that he saw what was happening in regard to the Civil War," and even saying that "people don't ask the question, but why was there the Civil War?"
- The truth just continues to evade President Trump. Even in the face of overwhelming facts, Trump is still claiming that his predecessor wiretapped him – "you saw what happened with surveillance" – but when pressed about the veracity of his claim and for an explanation, Trump abruptly ended an interview by saying "I don't stand by anything."
- Trump continues to flirt with dictators, praising North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a "pretty smart cookie," and then suggesting that he "would be honored" to meet with the authoritarian dictator. He also went so far as to invite an admitted murderer leading a brutal campaign of extrajudicial killings, Philippines President Duterte, to meet with him at the White House – and in an incredibly embarrassing move for Trump, Duterte responded that he might be too busy.
Within the past hour, President Trump tweeted that "our country needs a good shutdown." How ridiculous, reckless and irresponsible is that?! No more stalling. It's time for Speaker Ryan and the Republican Party to stage an intervention.
