Dear Colleague to All Members on Memorial Day

Dear Colleague,

One hundred and fifty-four years ago, thousands of Americans gathered at Arlington National Cemetery to place flowers on the graves of soldiers from both armies who perished in the Civil War. This profound act of healing, unity and hope began a proud American tradition, known then as Decoration Day and now Memorial Day.

Our sacred duty to honor our fallen heroes in uniform has long been and must always be a source of unity in our country. On this day, and every day, Americans are together in paying tribute to the men and women who gave their last full measure of devotion to keep our families safe and our nation free. And this year, we include in our prayers the many courageous Ukrainian soldiers who lay down their lives to defend Democracy for the world.

On Memorial Day, we recall the timeless words of President Lincoln, spoken at his second Inaugural Address: "Let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan: to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."
