Pelosi Statement on Observance of Memorial Day

San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today in observance of Memorial Day:

"On Memorial Day, Americans come together in gratitude for all those who gave their last full measure of devotion in defense of our sacred Democracy. These patriots bravely put their lives on the line wherever duty called – from dense jungles and blistering deserts to treacherous waters and fortified beachheads. Today and every day, we honor the generations of Servicemembers who have brought to bear awe-inspiring strength to keep our families safe and our nation free. And this year, we include in our prayers the many courageous Ukrainian soldiers who have laid down their lives to defend Democracy for the world.

"In paying tribute to our fallen heroes, we recommit to honoring a sacred American promise: just as our military leaves no soldier behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind when they come home. Earlier this year, the House proudly passed the Honoring our PACT Act – historic legislation that will strengthen care for millions of veterans exposed to dangerous toxins in the line of duty. And this month, the Congress reached a bipartisan, bicameral agreement to advance this lifesaving bill through the Senate.

"As President Lincoln wrote to the grieving mother of Civil War soldiers, the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform is laid upon the ‘altar of freedom.' So long as freedom rings across our nation, the courage, service and patriotism of the heroes we have lost will never be forgotten."
