Pelosi Statement on Cinco de Mayo
"On Cinco de Mayo, we reflect upon the victory of a Mexican militia who persevered against unimaginable odds and successfully defended their rights, history, and homeland from the might of the Imperial French army. In commemorating the Battle of Puebla, we celebrate the proud history of our Mexican neighbors and the rich legacy Mexican-Americans and all Americans of Latino heritage bring to our shared American story.
"Today, we salute the countless contributions of Mexican-Americans and the broader Latino community have made to our country – in the arts, in business, in science, in public service and in our armed forces. We celebrate the values embodied in the hopes of recent immigrants and the heritage of families who have been proud Americans for generations. Every day, our nation is strengthened by their dreams.
"On this proud day of celebration, we also renew our determination to defeat the forces of bigotry, xenophobia and racism. While the Administration seeks to tear apart law-abiding immigrant families, we will stand strong against those who would choose discrimination over inclusion. As we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, let us reaffirm our commitment to a future that includes and celebrates the background of every American."
