Pulling Out of JCPOA, Trump Isolates America & Endangers Global Security

Yesterday, President Trump stunned the international community when he announced the U.S. is pulling out of the successful Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

This dangerous decision leaves America isolated instead of Iran, weakens our international credibility during a critical moment to advance a denuclearization agreement with North Korea and recklessly puts the catastrophic threat of a nuclear-armed Iran back on the table.

And media outlets across the country agree: the President's decision to unilaterally walk away from this agreement defies all comprehension.

Tampa Bay Times: President is wrong to back out of Iran nuclear deal

That's not all.  Even Republican elected officials are condemning President Trump's decision to pull the U.S. out of the JCPOA as a ‘mistake':

Senator Jeff Flake [R-AZ]:

"Withdrawing [from JCPOA] now does not serve our national interest. Iran has already realized the benefits of sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets. Now they are let off the hook when it comes to honoring their nuclear obligations under the agreement."

Rep. Mac Thornberry [R-TX]:

"You need to have a clearer idea about next steps … especially given the larger context of Iran's aggressive activities in the Middle East."

Senator Susan Collins [R-ME]:

"It would have been a better course of action for the United States to continue to work closely with our allies … As we move forward, the Iranian threat remains a serious national security problem in urgent need of an effective and permanent solution."

Governor John Kasich [R-OH]:

"President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was a mistake. It has gotten us nothing other than to remove constraints on Iran's ability to produce nuclear weapons."

Rep. Ed Royce [R-CA]:

"Tearing up the nuclear deal will not recover this cash.  That toothpaste isn't going back into the tube.  It won't help galvanize our allies into addressing Iran's dangerous activities that threaten us all.  I fear a withdrawal would actually set back these efforts.  And Congress has heard nothing about alternative."

The Trump Administration's dangerous and impulsive decisions are no substitute for real global leadership.  Democrats will continue to show strong, smart leadership to keep our country safe.
