Dear Colleague on Honoring Victims of Gun Violence

June 7, 2022

Dear Democratic Colleague,

This morning, under the leadership of our national heroine on gun violence prevention, Gabby Giffords, Members of Congress and outside advocates gathered on the National Mall. We were there in the midst of 45,000 flowers, in honor of the 45,000 people who died of gun violence in 2020 — a staggering toll 5,000 more than the year before. In their remarks, Members and advocates talked about the need for and prospects of success for gun violence prevention legislation.

Tomorrow, our Democratic Majority will bring the Protecting Our Kids Act to the Floor, under the leadership of Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler. This urgent package includes a number of bold provisions that will save lives and give hope.

On behalf of the survivors of gun violence, and out of respect for those who lost their lives, I am asking all Members of our Caucus to be present on the Floor of the House for the two hours of debate, which should begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. following the vote on the Rule.

Many thanks to so many Members who have worked so hard to create strong legislation, which is written to earn the bipartisan support the American people expect and deserve.

Sincerely,

NANCY
