Dear Colleague: On August
July 30, 2018
Dear Democratic Colleague,
Greetings on 100 days before the election!!!
As the August Recess begins, we can feel proud of what our Caucus has achieved so far this Congress through our unity and sense of purpose. Our commitment to the economic well-being of working families has helped differentiate us from the damaging choices the Republican Congress has made to reward the wealthiest Americans and large corporations at the expense of weakening Americans' access to affordable health care.
Guided by your insight, our DPCC co-chairs, Reps. Bustos, Cicilline, and Jeffries, have presented the Caucus the work on our closing argument: For The People.
FOR THE PEOPLE:
- Lower your health care costs and prescription drug prices;
- Increase your pay through strong economic growth by rebuilding America;
- Clean up corruption to make Washington work for you.
The DPCC has distributed to your office a set of resources and suggestions for August that I am attaching again for your convenience. In addition, numerous outside organizations who have been instrumental in carrying the message about the continuing GOP threat to Americans' health care and the unfairness of the GOP tax scam are holding their own events this month and are always eager to include Members of Congress.
With fewer than 100 days before the election, we must take every opportunity to build on our success and continue to articulate to our constituents and the country what we would do in the Majority next year. To that end, I strongly urge you to OWN AUGUST through public events and a strong presence on social media.
RULES:
As we move toward a more Democratic Congress, we promise a more democratic Congress. To that end, we must be ready with a rules package on the first day of the 116th Congress – a Congress of civility, fairness and transparency.
The Rules Committee is the committee of jurisdiction for the rules package. Our House Democrats on the Rules Committee, Jim McGovern, Alcee Hastings, Jared Polis and Norma Torres, have worked excellently fighting for our values and our voice. We are grateful to our dear Louise Slaughter who, as Chair and Ranking Member, led the charge with all her might. Now we are blessed with the leadership of Ranking Member McGovern, who has served on the Committee for 18 years. You will be hearing from the Rules Committee welcoming any suggestions and meeting proposals you may have.
Now we must present our case to the American people about how we will make their lives better if given the honor to govern again. We will convey our values For The People with civility, strength and confidence.
Thank you for your leadership to OWN AUGUST!
best regards,
DISTRICT WORK PERIOD TOOLKIT ON FOR THE PEOPLE
Note: This Toolkit has been prepared by the Office of the Democratic Leader and the House Democratic Policy & Communications Committee (DPCC).
At the Leader's Meeting this morning, the Co-Chairs of the DPCC discussed how, as we enter the end of summer and the fall, House Democrats should focus their messaging on three top issues that are of the most concern to the American people.
The Co-Chairs pointed out that there has rarely been such a sharp distinction between what Democrats and Republicans stand for than right now. Democrats are standing for the people. By contrast, Republicans are standing for the rich, the lobbyists, the special interests, and the powerful.
The Co-Chairs urged House Democrats to collectively start focusing their messaging on a For The People agenda that spells out the three top things House Democrats will do for the American people when we win control of the House. They are:
- Lower your health care costs and prescription drug prices.
- Increase your pay through strong economic growth by rebuilding America.
- Clean up corruption to make Washington work for you.
This District Work Period Toolkit on For The People is designed to help Members and staff use events in their districts and social media to promote this agenda.
