Pelosi Statement Concluding Congressional Delegation to Indo-Pacific

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after concluding a Congressional delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan:

"President Biden has made smart, strong and strategic engagement in the Indo-Pacific region an important priority for his Administration. Our Congressional delegation's visits to Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan have delivered a clear statement that America's commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific is unshakeable.

"Throughout our delegation's many engagements in the region, we focused intensively on advancing security, economy and governance. Our bilateral discussions centered around seizing our shared opportunities and addressing our shared challenges, including upholding democracy in the face of autocracy, fostering robust economic growth including through the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, and in governance, responding to COVID and saving the planet from the climate crisis. We brought to each of the countries we visited our respect and our humility, to learn how we can deepen our bonds through positive, constructive conversation — listening and learning.

"Important to our visits in each country was meeting with leaders of the government and strengthening our inter-parliamentary relationships, meeting with Speakers and members of parliament.

"A priority of our visit was the special privilege of meeting with the heroic men and women in uniform stationed in the region. We conveyed on behalf of the Congress and our Country our endless gratitude for their patriotic service protecting our nation.

"We thank our U.S. Ambassadors, Country Teams and Embassy staff for their representation of our country and for graciously hosting us during our visits.

"As Speaker, it was my honor to lead this successful tour of the Indo-Pacific alongside our distinguished delegation, which included Chairs of powerful Committees of jurisdiction as well as Members who cherish their family ties to the region: Chairman Gregory Meeks, Chairman Mark Takano, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and Congressman Andy Kim.
