Pelosi Statement on Opening Day of G7 Speakers’ Summit
Berlin – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement following engagements on the opening day of the 2022 G7 Speakers' Summit:
"As House Speaker, it is my privilege to represent the United States at the G7 Speakers' Summit and to convey the proud and resolute support of America for our G7 partnership as it provides strong, unified leadership in the fight against autocracy.
"Today, in a series of bilateral meetings, I had the opportunity to express the appreciation of the Congress for the partnership of our allies. First, it was my honor to meet with our host, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas of Germany, to express gratitude for ensuring that support for Ukraine remains at the forefront of the G7's agenda. Together, America and Germany have played a central role in supporting Ukrainian freedom fighters and cutting off the engine of Putin's war economy, and we discussed ways we can continue that mission together.
"In a bilateral meeting with Speaker Hiroyuki Hosoda of Japan, I reiterated my gratitude for his hospitality in welcoming our Congressional delegation to Tokyo last month. We discussed how our nations can continue to bolster Democracy, including by building a free, open Indo-Pacific. Later, I met with Speaker Anthony Rota of Canada, our neighbor to the north and valued ally, to discuss how we can advance our shared priorities, including supporting Ukraine. With President Roberta Metsola of the European Parliament, I had the privilege of reaffirming America's ironclad support for the U.S.-E.U. partnership. We discussed how we can continue to impose severe consequences for Putin's heinous war crimes, while mitigating the impacts on working families on both sides of the Atlantic. Leaders of the G7 parliaments held a working dinner with Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, where we continued our discussions on our support for Ukraine.
"Tomorrow, it will be my privilege to deliver a keynote address on Russia's unprovoked, unjustified war against Ukraine. My message will be clear: the unshakeable unity of the G7 and our partners remains crucial to supporting the heroic Ukrainian people as they defend Democracy, for their nation and for the world."
