Pelosi Statement on Conclusion of 2022 G7 Speakers’ Summit

September 17, 2022

Berlin – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the conclusion of the 2022 G7 Speakers' Summit:

"The central message of the G7 Speakers' Summit was to declare, clearly and in one voice, that we stand in unwavering solidarity with Ukraine.

"All G7 Speakers were moved by the powerful presentation on the war in Ukraine by Ukrainian Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk during the opening session. Prior to his address, it was my privilege to engage in a bilateral meeting with him, where he conveyed the Rada's thanks for America's ongoing support. We discussed ways we can continue to work together to help Ukraine achieve victory, including with additional security assistance.

"It was my official honor to deliver a keynote address at Session I of the G7 Summit, during which I reaffirmed the unbreakable unity of the G7 alliance in the face of Russia's war and highlighted America's leading role in supporting the heroes of Ukraine. In a second session, parliamentary leaders discussed the importance of civic education and engagement, as well as the dangers of a departure from our shared Democratic values. Because of the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, our colleague Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, could not join us but joined virtually in support of Ukraine.

"In addition to engaging in official sessions, I had the opportunity at the summit to have bilateral meetings with Chamber of Deputies President Roberto Fico of Italy and President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet of France. Following the formal sessions, it was a privilege to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and later, with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. In both meetings, I conveyed the appreciation of the Congress for Germany's leadership as we work to support Ukraine. Our discussions continued with a dinner hosted by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Schloss Bellevue.

"On behalf of the United States Congress, I thank President Bärbel Bas for this productive Summit, which marks a pivotal step forward in strengthening the unbreakable unity of the G7 nations and our partners, as we carry on our defense of Democracy against autocracy."
