Pelosi Statement on Trump Administration’s Latest Attack on Immigrants

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after the Department of Homeland Security released a new policy that would deny green cards to eligible immigrants who have participated in government initiatives, including for food and housing:

"President Trump's attempt to deny the American Dream to hard-working families fighting to pursue better futures is an act of stunning callousness, and a direct assault on our nation's proud heritage as a beacon of hope, freedom and opportunity for all.

"This Administration and Republican Congress continue to cruelly punish immigrant communities, doubling down on their hateful, discriminatory anti-immigrant agenda with every passing day. It is particularly galling that the White House is pursuing this policy despite the Department of Homeland Security's clear, unequivocal conclusion that doing so would be devastating for the financial stability and health of American families, particularly children.

"This latest policy proposal adds to the list of shameful GOP attacks on our nation's immigrants, including the President's barbaric family separation policy, the House GOP's cynical use of patriotic Dreamers as partisan political pawns and the White House's termination of life-saving protections for those fleeing violence and oppression.

"Immigrants' contributions to the United States are not a result of their wealth, education or country of origin, but by the optimism, entrepreneurship and determination they bring to our shores. Democrats will never forget that our strength lies in our diversity, and are committed to fighting For The People as we continue to stand up against the Republicans' relentless assault on our immigrant heritage."
