Pelosi Statement on White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health

September 28, 2022

San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement ahead of the Biden-Harris Administration's historic White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health:

"Half a century ago, the White House hosted an unprecedented summit on hunger – spurring a wave of federal action that brought hope to kitchen tables and school cafeterias across the nation. Today, Americans are carrying on the fight to combat hunger, advance food justice and ensure every family has access to affordable, nutritious meals. With this year's White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, President Biden is mobilizing renewed, nationwide action against the hunger crisis – including more than $8 billion in private- and public-sector commitments.

"The injustice of children going to bed hungry is a moral outrage – one that motivated myself and many in our House Democratic Caucus to seek public office. Guided by Chairman Jim McGovern's relentless, visionary leadership of the House Hunger Caucus, we have proudly stood with the grassroots activists working to end hunger once and for all. With our American Rescue Plan, Democrats delivered $12 billion to help families keep food on the table amid the pandemic. And with the Keep Kids Fed Act, we took action to protect our children from rising food prices – securing free school meals for the 2022 summer break and ensuring cafeterias were equipped for the new school year.

"President Kennedy once told the World Food Congress: ‘We have the capacity to eliminate hunger from the face of the earth in our lifetime. We need only the will.' Inspired by the tireless efforts of advocates across the country, House Democrats will never relent in our fight to build a future free from hunger, food insecurity and diet-related disease. We look forward to drawing on the findings of today's Conference as we continue working to forge that future for all of America's children."
