Another Poll Finds Jobs Are #1 Priority & Reckless GOP "So Be It" Cuts Overwhelmingly Opposed

A Bloomberg poll released this morning shows the American people's top priority remains jobs – but we are ten weeks into this Republican-controlled Congress and have seen zero bills introduced by the GOP to create jobs. In fact, the Republican answer to jobs has been a "So Be It" spending bill that would cost 700,000 jobs and jeopardize our economic growth.

What is the most important issue facing the country today?

43 percent say unemployment and jobs (#1)

29 percent say the federal deficit and government spending (#2)

Americans overwhelmingly oppose reckless GOP "So Be It" cuts

77 percent oppose cuts to education programs including No Child Left Behind, Head Start and subsidies for college loans

72 percent oppose cuts to federal funding for medical and scientific research

62 percent oppose significant cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency

The Bloomberg poll finds most Americans more concerned with job creation than deficit reduction -- imagine that -- but when it comes to ideas to actually reduce the budget shortfall, the only popular ideas are cutting foreign aid, withdrawing from Iraq and Afghanistan, and raising taxes on households earning more than $250,000 a year.

What's unpopular? The entire GOP agenda: 66% of Americans don't want cuts to community renewal programs, 72% don't want cuts to medical and scientific research, 77% don't want cuts to education programs, and 50% don't want cuts to public television and public radio.

And in case anyone's forgotten, Republicans cut community renewal programs, medical and scientific research, education, and public broadcasts.

Congressional Republicans are absolutely convinced the country stands behind their proposed cuts. Every House GOP lawmaker voted for these cuts last month, and every Senate Republican will vote for them today.

But the country just isn't buying it.

Democrats remain committed to creating jobs, strengthening the middle class, and responsibly reducing the deficit.
