As Highway Trust Fund Expiration Approaches, Leader Pelosi Releases Report on Urgent California Infrastructure Needs

July 10, 2015
Washington, D.C. – With only 22 days left until the Highway and Transit Trust Fund expires on July 31st, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released a report showcasing the urgent infrastructure needs in California alone, and again called on Republicans to bring forward the long-term trust fund reauthorization the nation needs.

"With scant days left until the Highway Trust Fund expires in the middle of the summer construction season, Republicans have wasted this entire week tying themselves in knots to protect the Confederate Battle Flag," said Leader Pelosi. "Our nation's infrastructure needs are too serious for another Republican manufactured crisis, or another meager, short-term extension.  We must have a long-term bill to invest in our roads, transit and bridges, and protect the good-paying jobs of hundreds of thousands of construction workers across the country."

In California alone, almost 70 percent of roads are in mediocre or poor condition, forcing drivers to spend almost $14 billion a year – an average of $586 per motorist – on otherwise unnecessary automotive repairs, creating costs for commuters and businesses moving their goods to market.  With almost 30 percent of California's bridges also being structurally deficient, it is clear that it is well past time for the radical Republican leadership to join House Democrats in their effort to invest in America's infrastructure.

"Americans are tired of the potholes, the traffic delays, and the danger of our crumbling roads and bridges," continued Leader Pelosi.  "Hard-working American families deserve a long-term Highway bill that invests in world-class infrastructure and creates good-paying jobs."
