Boehner’s Proposed ‘Partisan Stunt’ Raises Republican Concerns

This week, Speaker Boehner proposed plans for a deeply partisan Select Committee on Benghazi – and Republicans across the country are already fundraising off of it.  Here's what MSNBC's Chuck Todd had to say this morning about the latest Republican attempt to exploit the Benghazi tragedy:

"The way they rolled this out, it feels very political… Right now…it looks like nothing more than a partisan stunt."  [5/7/14]

But it's not just independent observers who see the Republican Select Committee for the political stunt that it is – a growing number of Republicans, both conservative and moderate, are expressing concern over Republicans' plans to exploit the Benghazi attacks.

"For months, I think it's fair to say that John Boehner, the Speaker of the House, resisted calls for a Special Committee.  He just wouldn't -- didn't want to do this for a variety of reasons. It might look too political.  It might seem to promise more than the committee could absolutely – actually deliver." – Chris Wallace, FOX News [5/4]

"This should not be going on forever...from a strictly political point of view, I think the worst thing Republicans could be seen as is somehow encouraging a political fight over the fact that four Americans were murdered." – Rep. Peter King (R-NY) [5/5]

"Anybody who plays politics with Benghazi is going to get burned.  So if we're playing politics with Benghazi, then we'll get burned." – Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) [5/4]

Another one-sided review that serves only to politicize these attacks is disrespectful and unworthy of the American people.  The American public, independent analysts, and now even some key conservatives are warning House Republican leadership: stop exploiting tragedy, and start doing the job you were sent to Congress to do.
