GOP Leader's Bold Plan: Make America Forget About GOP Dysfunction

GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy desperately wants to prove that the GOP has the ability to work on behalf of the American people but as his partisan wish list highlighted in POLITICO yesterday shows more of the same including "new drilling on public lands" and "the House out of session on days besides Friday."

In reality, what the GOP Leader wants to do is make Americans immediately forget about the GOP-led Congress' obstruction, dysfunction, and distraction. As Leader McCarthy told POLITICO: "My belief is you have one chance to make a first impression" … Here's what the American people have seen:
  • Voted 8 times to block an increase in the minimum wage;
  • Voted SEVEN times to block the Paycheck Fairness Act;
  • Deliberately blocked bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform more than 5 times;
  • Carelessly voted more than 50 times to repeal and undermine the Affordable Care Act;
  • Voted to cut around 58,000 children from access to affordable child care and cut 170,000 children from Head Start;
  • Callously denied a renewal of emergency unemployment benefits for millions of Americans;
  • Voted repeatedly to subject our nation's DREAMers to deportation;
  • Voted to slash Medicaid by $732 billion over the next 10 years;
  • Voted 4 times to block legislation that would eliminate tax breaks for corporations that ship jobs overseas;
  • Caused the downgrading of America's credit rating, spending $1.3 billion in an unnecessary debt-ceiling battle;
  • Passed nearly $1 trillion in tax giveaways to special interests;
  • Voted to slash Pell Grants by $145 billion over the next 10 years, putting the education of thousands of college students at risk;
  • Broke records: making the 113th Congress the historically-least productive and making the earliest departure from Congress to the campaign trail in 54 years;
  • Voted to end the Medicare guarantee and raise seniors' health care costs;
  • Spent $2.3 million defending discriminatory Defense Against Marriage Act (DOMA);
  • Shut down the government at a cost of $24 billion to our economy and 120,000 jobs.

The country already got a glimpse of your dangerous partisan agenda for the 114th Congress last week, Mr. McCarthy. It's time to really get to work for the American people by joining House Democrats in jumpstarting the middle class and addressing issues of importance to the American people.
