GOP Repeal Bill: a Prescription for Disaster

March 7, 2017
Blog Post
Last night, Speaker Ryan and House Republicans released their ACA repeal bill – and it wasn't met with the best reviews:

Health care advocacy and consumer groups across the country are slamming it:

Families USA:

The GOP health care proposal would be laughable if its consequences weren't so devastating…This bill would strip coverage from millions of people and drive up consumer costs.

American Federation of Teachers:

This isn't a healthcare plan—it's a massive giveaway to insurance companies and those at the top, while it hits America's families with a triple whammy of less coverage, higher costs and more taxes.

First Focus:

The American Health Care Act would…be a major step backwards for our nation's children. [It] would seriously threaten the health and well-being of millions of children.

Consumers Union:

…marking up a bill that will impact millions of lives without a CBO score and without providing transparency and allowing for fair review is irresponsible and unfair to consumers.

Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA):

This proposal would…take many backward steps in the continual effort to improve our health care system…

Washington Interreligious Staff Community (WISC):

…the millions of people who could be affected deserve proof of a comprehensive replacement plan that would protect their access to coverage.  Changes to the ACA or Medicaid will impact the health of millions of Americans.

Sister Simone Campbell, NETWORK Advocates for Catholic Social Justice:

Our test for any ACA replacement bill is simple: Does the bill protect access to quality, affordable, equitable healthcare for vulnerable communities? After reviewing the House GOP replacement bill, the answer is a resounding no.

Community Catalyst:

It's no wonder the bill's drafters kept the content a secret as long as possible. It flies in the face of what the American people want.

Young Invincibles:

House Republicans introduced a bill to repeal and replace the ACA, which would have devastating effects on millions of young adults, a group which has seen the greatest health care gains under the ACA…

Planned Parenthood:

This proposal would deny millions of women access to cancer screenings, birth control, and STD testing and treatment.

Moveon.org:

The GOP plan will create a manufactured health care crisis in America and throw millions off their health care.  It is shameful, wrong, and more than anything else dangerous.

California's Health Consumer Advocacy Coalition:

This isn't repeal and replace, but repeal and destroy coverage for millions of Californians.

And the media is noting the truth about the plan:

New York Times: "Poor, older adults would face the largest crunch…"

POLITICO: "House Republicans' Obamacare replacement plan would cut taxes on the wealthy by hundreds of billions of dollars."

Buzzfeed: The Republican plan…includes a tax break for…executives making over $500,000 per year."

CNN: "…the reality is that the GOP replacement bill was not necessarily designed to cover more people than the Affordable Care Act did."

Chicago Tribune: "The truth is that the GOP measure would destroy the ability of millions of Americans to access any healthcare…"

Los Angeles Times: "the plan would probably take away health coverage from several million Americans and raise costs for many more, especially low-income people and the middle-aged."

Bloomberg: "There was no estimate of how much the bill will cost…"

The Republican bill will harm American families.  It raises costs for the middle class, cuts benefits, and kicks people off insurance.  Did Speaker Ryan and Congressional Republicans spend 7 years wasting taxpayers time and money with 65 votes to repeal or undermine the Affordable Care Act for this?  As House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said this morning on CBS: "Just when you've seen it all, the Republicans go to a more extreme place."

President Trump promised the American people that "everybody" would be covered under the Republican ACA repeal bill.  President Trump, Speaker Ryan: trust us that "everybody" is learning more of the outrageous GOP health care plan – and they're not liking what they're seeing.
