GOP's Destructive, Obstructive, and Dysfunctional Priorities on Full Display

January 7, 2015
Blog Post
Less than two days into the 114th Congress, Speaker Boehner and House Republicans have laid out their ‘New American Congress' agenda and revealed who has their ear: special interests and the wealthy.  Take a look at how they began their work of chipping away at the middle class and our nation's economy (when they weren't too busy attacking each other):

SPEAKER BOEHNER & HOUSE REPUBLICANS ATTEMPT TO PASS MORE GIVEAWAYS AND AN 11-BILL WALL STREET WISH LIST PACKAGE:

Reuters – Republicans Are Trying To Dilute Obama's Wall Street Reforms

The House of Representatives expects to vote Wednesday on legislation retooling a series of financial regulations, an early sign that Republican leaders will attack President Barack Obama's Wall Street reforms this year…Scaling back reforms including the so-called Volcker rule on banks is a top Republican priority as stated on the website of House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS RECOMMENCE THEIR ACA REPEAL & UNDERMINE CAMPAIGN:

Bloomberg –  Republicans Start Obamacare Assault

Republicans, newly in charge of the U.S. House and Senate, begin their campaign to dismantle Obamacare with a vote this week to ease the law's requirement that large employers give health insurance to full-time workers…Republicans continue to maintain that the health law must be repealed entirely, even as coverage under the measure grows. At least 7.1 million people are enrolled in private plans sold under the law so far in 2015, and another 9.7 million have been added to Medicaid, the program for low-income people.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS CHANGE RULES ON ‘DYNAMIC SCORING' & JEOPARDIZE SOCIAL SECURITY:

Talking Points Memo – New GOP Congress Fires Shot At Social Security On Day One

With a little-noticed proposal, Republicans took aim at Social Security on the very first day of the 114th Congress.

The incoming GOP majority approved late Tuesday a new rule that experts say could provoke an unprecedented crisis that conservatives could use as leverage in upcoming debates over entitlement reform…The largely overlooked change puts a new restriction on the routine transfer of tax revenues between the traditional Social Security retirement trust fund and the Social Security disability program.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS PLAN TO KILL PRESIDENT OBAMA'S IMMIGRATION ACTION:

Bloomberg – House Plans a Vote to Block Obama's Immigration Order

House Republicans plan to vote next week on legislation to block President Barack Obama's executive actions on immigration, days before the president's State of the Union address on Jan. 20…The tentative plan announced today would seek to block the actions.

REPUBLICANS DOUBLE DOWN ON THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE:

The Guardian – Senate Republicans to try to force construction of Keystone pipeline

Republicans will introduce a bill…to force construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, setting the new Congress on a collision course with the White House over Barack Obama's environmental agenda. The Keystone XL bill aims to take the decision about the controversial pipeline out of the president's hands.  It is seen as the first shot in an all-out Republican offensive against the Democratic president's environmental and health agenda.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS' INTERNAL DYSFUCTION ON FULL DISPLAY:

The Daily Caller – 25 Republicans Rebel Against Boehner, Who Still Wins Speaker Vote

Twenty-five House Republicans publicly rebelled against John Boehner on Tuesday, voting for another candidate for speaker during Tuesday's public floor vote but ultimately failing to prevent the Ohio Republican from winning re-election to the leadership post…While these conservatives didn't stop Boehner as they hoped, they will likely argue their votes sent a message of displeasure with the current GOP leadership.

Bloomberg – Boehner Takes His Revenge on Republicans Opposing Him for Speaker

John Boehner dished out a little payback, kicking two House Republicans off the influential Rules Committee and stopping a third from sponsoring a bill after they voted against his re-election for speaker…The returning Republican members of the rules panel were announced late Tuesday after the election for the chamber's top post, in which 24 of Boehner's fellow party members didn't vote for him.

Rather than standing for working people and middle class families, Republicans in Congress are clearly trying to bury their image problem and distractively force these measures down the throats of the American people.
