CARNEY ANNOUNCES NATIONAL GUARD READINESS HEARING

May 14, 2007 (WASHINGTON) -- Congressman Christopher P. Carney, Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Management, Investigations, and Oversight, announced that he will hold a hearing to examine the National Guard's readiness and equipping levels to respond to domestic emergencies in light of the Guard's repeated and extended deployments overseas.

Chairman Carney stated, "The National Guard plays a vital and irreplaceable role in our Nation's ability to respond to disasters, be they terrorist attacks or natural catastrophes. Yet as hurricane season looms, the Guard faces critical equipment shortages that threaten its capacity to protect the homeland. I intend to examine whether the Guard has the resources necessary for domestic missions so that our citizen soldiers are ready to go when they are next called upon to help Americans in need."

The hearing is part of the Committee's examination of the nation's homeland defense capabilities and the coordination among civilian and military agencies.
