House Democrats to GOP: End the Calendar of Chaos

House Republicans' total dysfunction is pushing hard-working Americans down a perilous Calendar of Chaos.  With Republicans locked in an unending intraparty soap opera, critical deadlines have piled up – threatening our economy and the financial security of American communities and families.  But while Republicans remain focused on their own melodrama and disarray, House Democrats are fighting for bipartisan solutions to avert these GOP-manufactured crises.

Republican dysfunction threatens a first-ever U.S. default on the full faith & credit of the United States:

The Hill: "With the House still clueless about who its next Speaker will be, Congress has just 10 legislative days to tackle a topic at the center of some of the most pitched fiscal battles of the last several years…'The first thing you'll see is a market reaction,' said Doug Holtz-Eakin, head of the right-leaning American Action Forum and a former director of the Congressional Budget Office. ‘Then you've got dramatic impacts on consumer confidence, the world's melting down again and they go into an economic fetal position … there's just no good news there.'

But House Democrats are calling on Republicans to drop their brinkmanship and honor our full faith & credit.

Leader Pelosi: "Our credit rating must not be threatened by the fever that has gripped the Republican Congress.  It's time for Republicans to end their Calendar of Chaos and join Democrats on a path to progress.  Republicans should bring forward a clean bill to honor the full faith and credit of the United States immediately."

Chairman Becerra: "Americans know that playing with credit is no game.  Payment deadlines are real.  The clock is ticking; default is not an option. I urge my Republican colleagues to resolve their feuding and let's get to work."

Republican dysfunction endangers the Highway & Transit Trust Fund – jeopardizing jobs and critical construction projects.

The Topeka Capital-Journal: "The current highway spending bill expires Oct. 29, and attempts to reauthorize it have fallen by the wayside amid a contentious House leadership race and what likely will be a difficult debt ceiling debate next month. ‘We're on a timeline, a short timeline here,' said Republican Rep. Lynn Jenkins."

But House Democrats are urging passage of a long-term, robust transportation bill to create jobs and revitalize our ailing infrastructure.

Rep. Suzan Delbene:"Too many of our nation's roads and bridges are in dire need of overdue repair and maintenance…Congress needs to prioritize a long-term transportation funding bill allowing us to get the best return on our investment."

Rep. Brendan Boyle: "The roads and bridges we commute on, on a daily basis, are crumbling.  It is time to invest in American infrastructure and create good paying construction jobs for hardworking Americans in Pennsylvania.  This is a matter of safety, efficiency, and economic growth."

And Republican dysfunction is laying the groundwork for another GOP shutdown – after 151 Republicans voted last month to shut down the government.

The New York Times: "Mr. McCarthy's decision leaves the House rudderless just weeks before the Treasury Department faces a debt default that could roil markets, and two months before a deadline for a budget deal to avoid another government shutdown."

It's time for House Republicans to end the drama, drop their Calendar of Chaos and join with Democrats on a path to progress for the American people.
