House GOP: Paying Lawyers $500-an-hour in Taxpayer Dollars to Sue the President
August 25, 2014
A month after Republicans in the House Rules Committee rejected 11 amendments from Democrats that would've increased transparency and accountability in funding the lawsuit, its long-awaited, no-bid contract negotiated in secret has been revealed. The GOP lawsuit to sue President Obama will cost taxpayers $500 per hour, and it will apparently…
"not exceed the sum of $350,000…" [8/25]
Many questions still remain, however:
- Legal fees more than quadrupled during the Speaker's quest to defend DOMA, repeatedly raising the cap, seeking modifications to the original DOMA contract, and spending a total of $2.3 million instead of the initial $500,000 – a tremendous amount of taxpayer money used to defend discrimination. Will Speaker Boehner and his colleagues seek modifications to this contract time and time again as well?
o If so, how many times will Mr. Boehner and House Republicans raise the cap?o How much will the final authorized funds to sue the President amount to?
