House GOP: More Tax Breaks for Wealthy, None for Low-Income Families

House Republicans passed another round of tax giveaway moments ago; but what's more, this legislation hurts millions of low-income working individuals, including children while benefiting affluent American families.  As Erika Eichelberger from Mother Jones notes:

GOP Bill Creates Tax Break for Americans Making Six Figures, Ignores Expiring Tax Credit for Low-Income Families

The bill… changes the way the federal child tax credit works…the legislation would allow a 2009 child tax credit increase for low-income families to expire...Here's how that would play out in the coming years. A single mother with two kids who makes $14,500 a year would lose $1,725 annually.

"The big winners would be the more-affluent families who would become newly eligible for the [child tax credit]," tax experts at the CBPP noted... "The losers would be millions of low-income families who are doing exactly what policymakers often say they want these people to do—working, even at low-wage jobs."

[about 12 million people will be pushed into, or deeper into poverty]…6 million children and roughly 400,000 veterans and military families would lose all or part of their child tax credit.

Not only is this insensitive piece of legislation strongly opposed by many influentialgroups, but it irresponsibly adds billions to the nation's deficit – bringing the support of unpaid-for giveaways to special interests to nearly $1 trillion!

It's time to end these callousness measures, fiscal hypocrisy, and once and for all meet the demands of the middle class and America's most vulnerable.
