House Republicans: Hypocritical and Fiscally Irresponsible
June 12, 2014
How much are House Republicans giving away to the wealthy and corporations on the backs of middle class and low-income families? Take a look:
- $200,000 to the average millionaire under the Ryan Republican Budget;
- Today, they are set to pass more of the unpaid for $614 billion 12-bill GOP package – a price tag that represents:
- More than 60 times more than the cost of renewing emergency unemployment insurance;
- 25 percent more than the entire projected federal deficit for 2014 of $492 billion;
- Almost 7 times the investments in education, job training, and social services in a year; and
- Ten times our annual investments in our veterans.
In short, they have continuously considered unpaid-for bills that would add nearly $1 trillion to the deficit while ignoring other targeted tax credits that would consequently create jobs and lift families out of poverty; and, they have unsympathetically refused to act on issues that matter to Americans:
- Renewing the emergency unemployment insurance for over 3 million hardworking Americans;
- Raising the minimum wage for millions of Americans;
- Passing comprehensive immigration reform, which would reduce the deficit by nearly a $1 trillion;
Instead of pandering to the special interests and the wealthy and going all-out on deficit-busting spending sprees, House Republicans should work with Democrats to create American jobs, spur innovation, and strengthen the economy for everyone.
