In 'Major' Tax Speech, Speaker Ryan Offers Minor Platitudes for Hard-working Americans
"According to his office, Mr. Ryan will not go into great detail about where he stands on the various tax proposals that have been dividing Republicans for months, but he will provide a broad outline of his thinking."
No surprise there. Instead, the Speaker will inevitably offer more coded language for raising taxes on the middle class and expanding tax giveaways to corporations and billionaires. Democrats agree that our tax code is broken and in need of repair, but we believe that any tax reform should put hard-working American families first.
Additionally, the tax reform plan that President Trump proposed in April would have added $5.5 trillion to the deficit. That's enough money to keep Social Security solvent for 75 years, but Republicans want to use it instead as a tax cut for the rich.
House Democrats strongly oppose any trickle-down economics tax plan that favors the wealthiest few at the expense of hard-working families, and are committed to moving forward in a bipartisan manner to create a fair tax code for all Americans.
