Leader Pelosi & House Democrats: Fighting for Women's Health Care

House GOP extremist Members obsessed with dismantling women's health care spent five hours today bullying and condescending to Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards who voluntarily agreed to appear before the House Oversight and Reform Committee.  Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats denounced these preposterous attacks and the GOP obstructionism earlier this afternoon:

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi:  "[Republicans] want to shut down the government to shut down Planned Parenthood.  And what does that mean?  It means they're so obsessed with depriving women of their respect that they deserve about their health, their families [and] their privacy.  But also, that they're willing to lose jobs – over 100,000 lost when they shut down government before, $25 billion lost to our economy."

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro:  "The last time they cause a shutdown, it was because of the Affordable Care Act…today their target is Planned Parenthood.  And while we may have averted a shutdown for right now, we know all too well that we'll be right back here in December.  Just mark my words: this is coming up again in December."

Congresswoman Doris Matsui: "…these attacks are nothing more than a political stunt and we know that.  But this affects people's lives.  And adding insult to injury, the bills republicans have put before us would unfairly target low income women and their families…"

Congressman Ruben Gallego:  "This is a manufactured issue created by an organization that had the agenda to destroy Planned Parenthood…"

Congressman Marc Veasey:  "The crisis level in my state of Texas that poor women face could soon be facing women across the country if Republicans are successful.  So instead of trying to shut down the government, we need to be doing everything that we can to make sure that women…are taken care of when it comes to health care."

Advancing radical measures that drastically reduce access to affordable family planning for low-income women across the country is plain wrong.  Republicans should stop their relentless assaults on women's comprehensive health care, do their jobs and start averting the latest Republican Government Shutdown they have presented the American people.
