Lesson for House Republicans: Listen to Your Constituents on Immigration
Eric Cantor was never a champion for immigration reform. He continuously ignored the calls from majority of Americans' to move forward with a comprehensive bill and refused to listen to his own constituents on the issue. According to a new poll by the Public Policy Polling:
"72% of voters in Cantor's district support the bipartisan immigration reform legislation on the table in Washington right now…And this is an issue voters want to see action on. 84% think it's important for the US to fix its immigration system this year, including 57% who say it's ‘very' important. Even among Republicans 58% say it's ‘very' important, suggesting that some of the backlash against Cantor could be for a lack of action on the issue."
Nothing is more important than listening to the voices of constituents. Americans know that kicking the can down the road on immigration reform is an unacceptable option. We continue to wait for Speaker John Boehner to give us a vote.
Mr. Speaker, the time is now more than ever. Will you continue to ignore calls for its passage? Or, will you heed the call of a majority of the American people, including a majority of Republicans, and move forward in a bipartisan and common sense fashion to fix our broken immigration system?
