Mr. McCarthy’s Constituents: Act on Immigration Reform Now!

June 23, 2014
Blog Post

Kevin McCarthy had this to say about immigration reform before getting elected as the new Majority Leader of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives:

"[It is not] dead…it is going to happen…"

"We have to move forward. We think it's most important to fix it…because we don't get to do this very often…the most important thing is to get it done…"

But Speaker Boehner, Leader McCarthy, and House Republicans have not taken action on commonsense legislation nor lived up to their lame rhetoric.  They've repeatedly ignored the calls and facts – including those reflected from Rep. McCarthy's district where 76 percent of likely 2014 voters, including 74 percent of Republicans support immigration reform.

As theNew York Times reports, calls to act on immigration reform not only come from Leader McCarthy's constituents, but they also…

"…come from the owners of large farms…the local Chamber of Commerce; and even the city's Republican mayor, all of whom have pressed Mr. McCarthy to at least put legislation up for a vote.

"Harvey L. Hall, the Republican mayor [of Bakersfield], has participated in demonstrations in support of immigration reform.

"This week, the City Council is expected to consider a resolution urging Mr. McCarthy to support immigration reform…"  [6/22]

A year since the Senate passed bipartisan immigration reform is days away.  House Republican Conference, it's time to demonstrate your leadership on this issue and do what's right for the American people and our country.  Listen to the outpouring majority of Americans, listen to your constituents, and give the American people a vote.
