On this Week’s Episode of the Real House Members of the Republican Congress
If you needed another example of how the House GOP's dysfunction and disarray on the budget is hurting hardworking Americans, here's the latest from the Washington Post on House Republicans' $900 million counting error, which will result in even more of the GOP's draconian, heartless budget cuts:
Washington Post: Error in House budget understated spending cuts by $900 million
A correction to the House Republican budget released this week could mean far deeper cuts for federal employees than the original document suggested, further alarming government workers and their unions already upset about hits they have taken in recent years.
The initial version called for the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to identify $100 million in savings over a decade from mandatory spending programs within its jurisdiction, which includes the federal-worker retirement and health plans. But the amount was supposed to be $1 billion — 10 times larger than first advertised.
A drafting error caused the mistake, according to the Republican-controlled House Budget Committee, which corrected the figure during a markup of the legislation Wednesday.
And The Hill has more details on House Republicans' troubled budget markup late Wednesday:
The Hill: Inside the GOP's budget drama
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) had wanted to avoid any embarrassing snafus when the new GOP budget hit the floor.
Instead, he found trouble a week early.
…
The late-night drama raised more questions about the vote-counting skills of Scalise — who this time had trouble not with the 218 votes needed to get a bill through the House, but the 19 needed to ensure the budget passed through committee.
The Washington Post's Paul Waldman perhaps said it best: "It sometimes seems like an endless episode of ‘Real Housewives,' where even the tiniest disagreement quickly turns to shouted insults and overturned chairs." Speaker Boehner: the American people are tuning in to this latest edition of Republican dysfunction and disarray. And you can trust they don't like what they see.
