Paul Ryan Makes A Promise to House GOP: No Immigration Reform
After years of failed leadership from Speaker Boehner – who has time and again refused to take up bipartisan legislation to fix our broken immigration system – Paul Ryan is promising the radical right more inaction and obstruction on immigration in exchange for support from the extremists.
CNN: "Ryan also gave members some assurances on immigration, an issue on which he has drawn some criticism for from right-wingers. ‘There would be no immigration bill forthcoming that did not go beyond border security or internal security or was approved in substance and form by a majority of majority,' [Rep. Mo] Brooks said."
National Review: "…he also hinted strongly that he will not bring an immigration bill to the House floor. He told his colleagues the issue was simply ‘too divisive'
Not only is Congressman Ryan guaranteeing the same refusal to act on immigration as his predecessor – but he's also using the same pathetic, tired excuses as Speaker Boehner:
"A spokesman for the Ways and Means Committee chairman said that Ryan does not believe President Barack Obama to be an honest broker on the immigration issue, and would avoid the divisiveness that comes with immigration reform efforts while Obama remains in the White House." [Free Beacon, 10/21]
House Republican Leaders know the facts on immigration reform. They know immigration reform has overwhelming bipartisan support. They know it would strengthen our economy, reduce the deficit and honor our values as a nation. But none of that matters: as always – no matter who is in "charge" – radicals are running the show in the Republican Congress. And House Republican leaders will continue to sell out millions in exchange for the support of a few dozen extremists in their Conference.
